At Nag's Head, we turned north and drove to our first destination of the day - The Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills. This was the first visit for both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were fortunate to arrive just as the ranger's presentation began.
In the photo, Hannah is standing on the replica launch rail at the stone marking the take-off point. Behind her are the marker stones for the first three flights and far in the distance is the marker stone for the forth flight.
Hannah is standing near the second flight marker with the Wright Memorial obelisk visible in the background. The smoke that covered the area today is noticeable in this picture.
Then we were off again, crossing back over to the mainland and driving north into Virginia toward Norfolk. Here we crossed the Chesapeake Bay using the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. We stopped at a rest area in the bay at the point where the northbound bridge goes underwater and searched for "Miles from Land" (CG6DC2).
Continuing on northward, we arrived at the Virginia/Maryland state line where we stopped long enough to find two quick caches and then were back on the road headed to Delaware. Up until this point our travel was unobstructed. In southern Delaware we ran into road construction in several spots which really bogged us down. Finally, we reached Wilmington, DE and after a few wrong turns, checked into our motel for the night.
Our progress today - 408 miles
Cumulative distance traveled - 988 miles
Tonight's longitude - W075 39.516
