This morning was our departure and, for us, it went surprisingly smooth. We were packed, the car loaded, and on our way before 7:30 am thanks to all the preparations and planning that Hannah had done. For a moment it seemed the trunk lid wouldn't close but with a little shifting, we had room to spare.
Our route for the first day was up I-85 through Georgia, South Carolina, and into North Carolina, joining with I-40 around Greensboro and then following US 64 out of Raleigh.
Our first stop was to hunt a special geocache named "What, Me Worry???" (GC5C81).
We followed the cache coordinates and when we arrived at the spot, this is what we found.

You may be asking yourself, what is that thing in the background? If you guessed that it's the ferry, you are correct.

It is a cable ferry, one of three that are still operating in North Carolina. It looks ready to load and Hannah looks ready to go but there is no one around.

While we wait, I make friends with the young tabby that seems to own the landing. Then we decide that maybe we should follow the instructions we saw when we first drove up. We blew the horn.

Here we are underway. If you look closely, you may spot the reason for the cache's name.
After leaving the ferry, we continued on to our destination for the night - Plymouth, NC. We had to check out the town for interesting spots and we found one with a cache; "Lighthouse on the Roanoke???", GC10RGW.

It is a full size replica of a historic NC lighthouse. It houses a museum but unfortunately it was closed today.
Our progress today: 580 miles
